LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY STARTUP STORY

In 2010, just like most start-ups, we started small with a vision to transform the way fresh fruits and vegetables are sold, prepared and consumed in Nigeria but with no adequate knowledge of how to hire and retain the right team.

One of our biggest struggles was getting staff who understand what we were trying to achieve with the brand.

I didn’t quite know how to get them to repeatedly do what they were supposed to do every time without reminding them all the time, so I have to always monitor them to avoid mistakes and with this style, we didn’t achieve much, I was frustrated, the team was frustrated and we could not grow.

Eventually, everyone designed their own way of doing things and this created a bigger mess!

We ended up always making returns and refunds due to product and service complaints. We applied sanctions for every mistake just to get a better result from them, threatened to fire them but that did not also work.

I even got tired of issuing queries. The quality of job they produced was very poor.

I would shout, scream, complain, frown, deduct their salaries yet no difference. So I tried the silent treatment, I just kept quiet and left them to do whatever they wanted to do because I was just very tired of the unending cycle of hiring and firing, still it did not work!

Bills were piling up, sales dropped, customers complaints grew, office environment became toxic and profits started declining…….

So I had to stop and took a step back.

I knew we needed a better structure and process that could help us attract and get the kind of result we wanted from our team, but I didn’t just know how to create a system that allows people to do a great job repeatedly whether I am around or not.

By 2013, we had suffered so much that we were at the verge of shutting down after 3 years of failure.
